Today at the BlackBerry DevCon in San Francisco, RIM announced its bran-new tablet device: the BlackBerry PlayBook. The device is scheduled for release in early 2011 in North America, and will roll out to the rest of the world in the second quarter.

Global smartphone shipments rose 43 percent annually to a record 60 million units during the second quarter, according to new figures from Strategy Analytics. The research firm credited “healthy operator subsidies, vigorous competition between premium-tier vendors and a growing range of lower-cost models” for the strong growth in the segment.
